Oklahoma lost 42–25 to South Carolina on Saturday, fell to 4–4 and left us asking a question that is getting harder to ignore: What actually changes from here?
Calling a performance embarrassing only goes so far. At some point, the decisions have to change, too.
On the latest OUInsider Rapid Reaction, Travis Davidson and I break down a loss that exposed familiar offensive problems and brought a defensive performance the Sooners could not afford.
The quarterback decision is front and center. John Mateer stayed in the game while Oklahoma’s offense struggled to generate anything meaningful for much of the afternoon. We discuss why the staff did not turn to another quarterback and what OU is learning about Whitt Newbauer and Bowe Bentley while they remain on the sideline.
There is also a disagreement worth hearing on Ben Arbuckle’s offense. If receivers are getting open, how much responsibility belongs to the quarterback? And if the quarterback repeatedly cannot execute what is being called, what responsibility falls on the coaches to adjust or make a change?
Those are questions Oklahoma has to answer before another week of talking about practice and preparation.
The defense has plenty to answer for as well. South Carolina finished with 521 yards, and OU lost by 17 despite winning the turnover battle 3–0. LaNorris Sellers repeatedly created problems with his arm and legs, and Oklahoma’s tackling and ability to limit explosive plays were nowhere near good enough.
I also explain what I saw on the sideline, including concerning body language and frustration between players. We discuss the slippery field and why both teams dealing with those conditions made adjusting to them essential.
Then comes the bigger conversation for Brent Venables and Jim Nagy: How much should the remaining schedule be used to evaluate younger players and learn what Oklahoma has for 2027?
A different quarterback next season cannot simply be assumed to fix every problem. The Sooners need answers about development, offensive consistency and the players they intend to build around.
Watch or listen to the full Rapid Reaction for that discussion and our immediate takeaways from a rough afternoon in Norman.
