NORMAN — Game week has officially arrived for Oklahoma.
Sooners head coach Brent Venables met with reporters Monday ahead of Oklahoma’s 2026 season opener against UTEP, addressing his team’s identity, an experienced two-deep, the growth of John Mateer and the standards OU must meet when it takes the field Friday night.
Venables opened by reflecting on the work Oklahoma’s players and coaches have put in over the past eight months. In an era of constant roster movement, he said one of the sport’s most difficult challenges is creating a true team built on selflessness, maturity and togetherness.
“Really excited about what they’re becoming and who they’re becoming in regard to their identity,” Venables said. “Really looking forward to watching them go out and play against somebody else and see where we’re at.”
The Sooners will face a UTEP team Venables expects to arrive with a physical, fearless approach. He praised Miners coach Scott Walden’s passion, energy and attention to detail while reminding his players that UTEP trailed Texas only 7–3 at halftime last season.
Venables also discussed Oklahoma’s offensive expectations. The Sooners have added personnel and versatility, but he said physicality, belief and cohesion must provide the foundation. OU must also create more explosive plays after an offseason spent searching for greater balance.
Asked what winning football should look like Friday, Venables offered a direct formula: stop the run, run the football, create explosive plays and win the turnover margin. Beyond the statistics, he wants an aggressive team that avoids pre-snap penalties and mental mistakes.
The press conference also included extensive updates on Trell Harris, Omarion Robinson, Lloyd Avant and several emerging players, along with Venables’ assessment of Mateer’s development as Oklahoma’s quarterback and leader.
Venables acknowledged the difficulty of playing on the opening Friday night of Oklahoma’s high school football season, calling the situation “not ideal” and saying he does not expect it to become OU’s identity moving forward.
